Don’t let a bad password ruin your reputation

Real estate professionals are a prime target for cybercriminals. You handle so much sensitive information—client data, transaction details, and financial records. You're also always on the go, logging into critical systems from your phone, laptop, or even coffee shop Wi-Fi. It's a lot to keep track of, and it's easy to overlook security.
The threats are getting more sophisticated every day, and a single breach can impact your reputation and your clients’ trust. The good news? A few simple habits can make a huge difference.
Passwords: Your first line of defense
Weak or reused passwords are the easiest way for hackers to get in. Using the same password for everything is a major security risk. If a hacker gets one, they get access to everything.
The best way to protect against those risks is to practice smart password hygiene. That means:
- Use longer passwords or passphrases that are at least 14 characters
- Avoid using a dictionary word for a password, even with substitutions, because automated attacks can easily crack those passwords
- Don’t share your passwords with others
- Don’t reuse the same password on multiple other sites no matter how complex you think that password is
- Use a password manager to help you create and manage all your passwords
- And reset your passwords at least every 6 months
Always enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
MFA provides a second layer of security. It requires an additional step, like a code from your phone, to log in. This simple step can stop a hacker, even if they have your password. Always enable MFA on your most critical accounts, including your email, MLS, and transaction platforms.
Remember, convenience isn't worth the risk. Good cybersecurity habits protect your business, your reputation, and most importantly, your clients' trust.
