How energy efficient are Australian homes?
Cotality analysis shows that homes built since 2010 are, on average, twice as energy efficient as those built before 2010 - a clear sign of the impact stronger building standards are having on Australia’s housing. Using CSIRO’s RapidRate™ metrics and Cotality data, the report 'Amped Up: How energy efficient are Australian homes?' reveals a median star rating of 5.9 for newer homes compared with just 2.8 for older homes.
Key findings
The typical home built in 2010 or later is twice as energy efficient compared to homes built before 2010.
The significant difference in energy efficiency can be attributed to changes in the National Construction Code (NCC) - no doubt topical given the Coalition's pledge last month to freeze the code.
ACT is Australia’s most energy efficient state, while Sydney and Hobart fail to make the list. The region of Molonglo in ACT nabbed the top spot as the nation’s most energy efficient area, with the highest median star rating at 6.1

The Amped Up report shows how data-driven insights can help shape policy, guide investment and power progress towards a better future.
